What Is Nirjala Ekadashi?
Nirjala Ekadashi falls on the Ekadashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha. The word “Nirjala” means without water, making it one of the most challenging and spiritually significant fasts in Hinduism.
Devotees dedicate this day to Lord Vishnu, seeking blessings for prosperity, good health, spiritual growth, and liberation from past sins.
Story Behind Nirjala Ekadashi
According to Hindu scriptures, Bhima, one of the Pandavas, found it difficult to observe all Ekadashi fasts due to his strong appetite.
When he approached Maharishi Ved Vyasa for guidance, the sage advised him to observe just one strict fast every year without consuming food or water. This fast became known as Nirjala Ekadashi.
It is believed that observing this Ekadashi with devotion grants the merit of all other Ekadashis.
